Tony Wendice married his wife, Margo, for her money. Now he plans to murder her for the same reason. He arranges what he thinks will be the perfect murder and then provides himself with a brilliant alibi. Unfortunately for Tony, things do not turn out as planned, but this doesn't stop him from contriving yet another plot where he can still acquire Margo's money.
