Jack lives a respectable life in the country with his young ward, Cecily, and has created an imaginary wayward brother called Ernest, whom he uses as a pretext for going up to London. Algernon lives in luxury in London, and he has created an imaginary invalid friend whom he visits to avoid unappealing engagements. Unknown to Jack, to meet Cecily, Algernon has taken on the identity of Ernest. Jack wants to marry Algernon's cousin, Gwendolyn, but must first prove his family's respectability. To do this, Jack announces that Ernest has died!
